The Siberian is considered a medium breed. Females can range from 8lbs-13lbs. Males can range from 10lbs-20lbs. Siberians are slow to mature and take five years to fully develop. Their coat is medium to long hair with very dense triple layers. They have a long bushy tail which they carry with pride. Their round eyes can vary in color from green to gold shades. Colorpoints will always have blue eyes. Siberians are easygoing and affectionate, getting along well with other animals and with children. They have a loud purr and make a chirping sound when they come to greet you. They will seek out your attention and will not know a stranger when guest come to visit. They are very smart and observant problem solvers. They enjoy playing with toys and learning tricks. They will follow you around and seek out companionship.
Many people consider Siberians hypoallergenic due to lower than usual FelD1 enzyme levels in their saliva. FelD1 is the primary cat allergen thought to cause allergic reactions in people. Most (not all) cat allergy suffers have no reaction to Siberians. Scientist have discovered female Siberians to carry less of the FelD1 protein in their saliva. In addition, they have reported neutering and spaying Siberians greatly reduces the level of FelD1 protein. I recommend allergy sufferers choose a female kitten and have her spayed at 5 months.
Please consult your physician before purchasing a pet if you have allergies.
